The FIRST Official Off-Leash Dog Trail - 11.06.2014
Basin Recreation knows that Park City residents love their dogs! We are pleased to announce the newest addition to the trails system, Run-A-Muk Trail and Off-Leash Area, located in Kimball Junction. The fenced open space and two-mile trail stretch over 43 acres just below the Utah Olympic Park. Run-A-Muk can be accessed from Millennium Trail, located to the north of Bear Cub Drive and to the south of the pedestrian tunnel near Whole Foods. The trail is also accessible from the new parking area along Olympic Parkway. With both a shorter and longer loop, dogs (along with their humans) have multiple options to choose from.
Off-leash dog areas have been the topic of conversation in the Snyderville Basin for the past couple of years. The Dog Task Force, which is comprised of members from Park City, Summit County, Basin Recreation, and the public, was formed with the intention to restructure animal ordinances and enforce the laws regarding animals in public areas. At the time, dog parks were not even legal! After paving the way for providing legal dog parks and building a few throughout the Park City community, the task force quickly realized the need for more types of off-leash dog areas.
Through a series of meetings and brainstorming sessions, Summit County Council determined that area trails would be the next venue for off-leash dogs. In order for off-leash trails to be successful, Basin Recreation would need to provide an owned piece of property and build a new trail specifically for residents to bring their dogs for open play. Run-A-Muk Trail and Off-Leash Area is a result of these negotiations.
As always, dog owners are required per County Code Title 5 Chapter 1 to pick up and pack out their dogs' waste. This beautiful open space needs to be taken care of by the entire community. Owners are also responsible for keeping their dogs in control at all times, preventing them from chasing wildlife and being aggressive toward other dogs and their owners.
A small ribbon-cutting ceremony will take place on Friday, November 7th from 9:30am-10:30am at the Run-A-Muk Trail. Meet at the new trailhead on Olympic Parkway. Grab your four-legged friend and head over to celebrate this amazing new trail! Run-A-Muk will be open year-round. Basin Recreation encourages you to get out on the trails! Enjoy!
